OceanSig Privacy Policy & Technical Practices
This Privacy Policy explains how OceanSig (“we,” “our,” or “the platform”), operated by Hutch, handles technical information, browser storage, and communications.
1. Information Collected Automatically
When you access OceanSig via the web, our hosting infrastructure (Vercel) automatically logs standard technical metadata to serve pages and protect against denial-of-service or malicious traffic:
- HTTP Request Logs: Client IP address, HTTP request method, URL path, timestamp, and HTTP response status code.
- Client Information: User-agent string (browser type and operating system) and HTTP referrer header.
- Operational Diagnostics: Aggregate request counts, latency measurements, and error rates to monitor platform stability.
2. Browser-Local Storage & Cookies
OceanSig utilizes modern client-side storage to deliver a responsive, private research workspace without requiring a persistent cloud account:
Stores your active investigation drafts, selected evidence items, custom filter presets, and UI preference states. This data resides solely on your physical device unless you explicitly export an RO-Crate package.
Strictly technical session tokens used for routing and operator-restricted administration surfaces. We do not use third-party tracking cookies or advertising pixels.
3. Information You Voluntarily Provide
If you contact the operator via email (Hutchsolves@gmail.com) to submit feedback, report a scientific data discrepancy, or request assistance, we use your email address and message contents solely to evaluate your submission and respond directly to you.
4. Third-Party Infrastructure & Hosting
OceanSig is hosted globally on Vercel’s edge network and cloud infrastructure. Vercel processes technical traffic in accordance with its enterprise security and privacy standards. Public scientific data is fetched directly or asynchronously from open government endpoints (e.g. NOAA NDBC, CO-OPS, CRW).
5. No Sale of Data & No Behavioral Profiling
We do not sell, rent, license, or monetize your personal information or research queries. We do not participate in cross-context behavioral advertising networks or automated profiling.
6. Data Retention & Security Limitations
Server logs are retained temporarily for operational diagnostics and rotated per standard cloud lifecycle. Browser-local storage remains on your machine until you delete your browser data or clear the workspace.
While we enforce HTTPS encryption across all platform endpoints, no digital transmission over the internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. Users should exercise standard caution and avoid storing confidential credentials or sensitive personal information in unencrypted local drafts.
7. External Links & Policy Updates
OceanSig links to external data sources, research repositories, and academic publishers. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party domains.
We may update this policy periodically to reflect platform enhancements or legal developments. Significant changes will be indicated by updating the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page.
8. Privacy Contact
