Evidence-Aware Marine Scientific Investigation Platform
OceanSig is an independent, evidence-aware marine research and scientific investigation platform. Its core purpose is to help researchers, oceanographers, and environmental scientists work across heterogeneous marine data sources without silently treating unlike physical measurements as equivalent.
Modern marine investigations frequently synthesize satellite radiometry, moored buoy telemetry, coastal tide gauge thermistors, diver surveys, and benthic acoustic recordings. OceanSig provides the mechanical tooling to discover observations, inspect provenance down to raw source bytes, evaluate comparability across 18 distinct physical dimensions, enforce claim boundaries, and export standards-compliant RO-Crate 1.3 research packages.
Operator & Project Status
Completed Public Scientific Platform
Available for public research use, scholarly evaluation, and reproducible multi-source investigation testing.
• Version 1.0 ProductionWhat OceanSig Is Not
To preserve scientific truth and prevent misunderstanding, we explicitly state what this platform does not do and what it is not:
- •Not a Government Agency: OceanSig is not NOAA, NASA, NSF, USGS, OOI, ONC, MBARI, or any government body.
- •No Institutional Affiliation or Endorsement: OceanSig is an independent initiative. Use of public scientific data from authoritative providers does not imply partnership, endorsement, or certification by those agencies.
- •Not an Official Warning or Navigation Service: OceanSig must never be used for maritime navigation, coastal evacuation, life safety, or emergency response. Authoritative agency products govern all operational decisions.
- •Not a Replacement for Expert Peer Review: While OceanSig assists in organizing and exporting evidence, conclusions remain the responsibility of the investigating researcher and subject-matter peers.
Epistemic Tiers & Comparability Engine
OceanSig classifies all observations and findings into formal epistemic tiers to prevent over-claiming and preserve scientific integrity:
Satellite composite products (e.g. NOAA CRW 5-km L4 SST & Degree Heating Weeks). Represents regional skin temperature anomaly, not depth-resolved in-situ habitat temperature.
Direct in-situ sensors (e.g. NOAA CO-OPS NWLON shallow harbor thermistors, NDBC moored buoys). Highly precise at sensor depth, but localized and non-equivalent to satellite skin.
Documented expert diver surveys and photographic records (e.g. NOAA AOML Cheeca Rocks). Confirms localized phenomenon onset; does not quantify regional mortality.
Calibrated deep benthic hydrophone recordings (e.g. MBARI MARS Sanctuary Soundscape). Measures ambient sound pressure levels, not direct surface animal abundance.
Researcher Workflow Cycle
Discover Marine Observations
Explore geographic maps, multi-station time series, and live telemetry feeds across satellite radiometry, moored buoys, in-situ harbor thermistors, and acoustic soundscapes.
Evaluate Physical Comparability
Inspect formal 18-dimension Comparison Contracts before equating disparate sensor supports (e.g. satellite skin SST vs subsurface harbor thermistors).
Construct Structured Investigations
Formulate empirical research questions, associate observations, evaluate hypotheses, and define strict claim ceilings with machine-verifiable boundaries.
Inspect Provenance Down to Raw Bytes
Trace every rendered metric back through an unbroken 6-step walkback chain to immutable, retained authoritative raw source files and SHA-256 digests.
Export Reproducible Research Packages
Export RO-Crate 1.3 compliant JSON-LD research packages, tabular evidence summaries, and formatted citations (BibTeX/APA) for scholarly publication.
