Connected Marine Observation Sources & Catalog

Technical specifications, epistemic classifications, sampling frequencies, and known scientific limitations for all data streams integrated into OceanSig.

Satellite Infrared Radiometry (L4 Composite)CONNECTED

NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW v3.1) Regional Virtual Stations

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NESDIS / STAR / SOCD)

Spatial Res5 km (0.05 degree) Level-4 spatial grid composite
Sampling RateDaily (once every 24 hours)
Temporal Range1985-01-01 to Present (Continuous Daily)
Epistemic TierPARSED_FROM_SOURCE

Available Variables

Sea Surface Temperature (SST) (°C)SST Anomaly (SSTA) (°C)Coral Bleaching HotSpot (°C)Degree Heating Weeks (DHW) (°C-weeks)Bleaching Alert Area (BAA) (categorical (0–4))
Documented Scientific Limitations
  • Satellite thermal-infrared sea-surface temperature product; representative of the ocean surface skin and not a measurement of subsurface or benthic water temperature.
  • 5-km grid composite averages across open water and reef channels, dampening localized temperature extremes.
  • Consumed as precomputed operational product; raw orbital granule calibration is not performed by OceanSig.

In-Situ Fixed-Depth Harbor & Bay ThermistorsCONNECTED

NOAA National Ocean Service (CO-OPS) NWLON Fixed Thermistors

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOS / CO-OPS)

Spatial ResPoint observation (fixed sensor depth: 0.85 m MLLW at Key West, 1.03 m MLLW at Vaca Key)
Sampling Rate6-Minute continuous interval (240 samples/day)
Temporal RangeContinuous multi-decadal NWLON record (Full July 2026 6-min data retained)
Epistemic TierMACHINE_COMPUTED

Available Variables

Water Temperature (Continuous) (°C)Daily Minimum Water Temperature (°C)Daily Maximum Water Temperature (°C)
Documented Scientific Limitations
  • On July 19, 2026, the retained KYWF1 and VCAF1 daily means were approximately 0.95 °C and 0.84 °C warmer, respectively, than the CRW SST@90th_HS value. These measurements are spatially and physically non-equivalent and should not be interpreted as establishing a persistent offset.
  • Cannot be spatially extrapolated 70–130 km to outer bank reefs without hydrodynamic modeling.
  • Fixed mounting depth integrates local water column rather than ocean surface skin.

In-Situ Scientific Diver Survey & Field PhotographyCONNECTED

NOAA AOML Coral Program Biological Field Reporting

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (OAR / AOML)

Spatial ResReef-scale localized patch reef (<0.5 km²)
Sampling RatePeriodic scientific diver campaigns
Temporal RangeEvent-based field surveys (July 2026 documented event)
Epistemic TierHUMAN_ASSISTED_NORMALIZED

Available Variables

Bleaching Onset Observation (Qualitative Documentation)
Documented Scientific Limitations
  • Documented onset at one localized inshore patch reef cannot be generalized to a quantitative bleaching percentage across the entire Florida Keys reef tract.
  • Initial bleaching observation does not establish coral mortality without post-stress demographic survival surveys.
  • Raw diver benthic transect spreadsheets remain pending formal NCEI accession.

Moored Meteorological & Oceanographic Buoys (Live Feed)CONNECTED

NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) Real-Time Feeds

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NWS / NDBC)

Spatial ResPoint buoy location
Sampling RateHourly (or 10-minute real-time packets)
Temporal RangeLive Streaming & Historical NDBC Archive
Epistemic TierEXTERNAL_METADATA_ASSERTION

Available Variables

Water Temperature (°C)Significant Wave Height (m)Wind Speed (m/s)Barometric Pressure (hPa)
Documented Scientific Limitations
  • LIVE_EXTERNAL_SOURCE only: NDBC telemetry is not part of the retained Florida Keys 2026 candidate evidence package.
  • Molasses Reef C-MAN (Station MLRF1) was disestablished on 2023-02-28; zero 2026 observations exist.
  • Cheeca Rocks STR subsurface logger time series requires physical logger recovery and remains pending (CHEECA_ROCKS_2026_STR_LOGGER_TIME_SERIES_PENDING_PHYSICAL_RECOVERY).
  • Hull temperature reflects 1 m depth in open ocean and cannot be substituted for benthic reef substrate.

Deep-Sea Cabled Acoustic Hydrophone & SoundscapeCONNECTED

MBARI MARS & NOAA SanctSound Deep-Sea Soundscape

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute & NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries

Spatial ResBenthic point sensor with 30+ km acoustic detection radius
Sampling RateHourly SPL metrics derived from 256 kHz raw audio stream
Temporal Range2015 to Present Continuous Soundscape Archive
Epistemic TierPARSED_FROM_SOURCE

Available Variables

Sound Pressure Level (SPL 50–300 Hz) (dB re 1 µPa)Blue & Humpback Whale Vocalization Index (Detections / Hour)
Documented Scientific Limitations
  • Deep hydrophone at 891m integrates broad acoustic catchment; cannot infer localized surface animal density without visual or echosounder verification (Blocked Overclaim H-MB-1).
  • High-bandwidth 256 kHz raw WAV streams require dedicated archive ingestion; OceanSig ingests standardized hourly sound pressure level indices.
